Comic book geek that I am, I knew about this already, but the new trailer for the upcoming Incredible Hulk movie confirms it. Robert Downey Jr. will be reprising his Iron Man role of Tony Stark in the new Hulk flick. The trailer is now online, right here.
For those of you who don’t belong to the same extreme outer circles of geekdom as I do, let me briefly explain why this is a big deal. Marvel Comics, the publisher that owns both the Hulk and Iron Man, has long been farming their properties (including Spider-Man, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, among others) to different movie studios. Now they’ve established their own company, Marvel Studios, to produce the films themselves, with the intent of creating some cross-pollination. In the next few years, they intend to produce films featuring their characters Thor, Ant-Man, and a World War II period piece featuring Captain America, before eventually bringing all of these characters (along with Iron Man and the Hulk) into a movie starring their premiere team of heroes, the Avengers.
Again, allow me to put this into layman’s terms. Freddy Vs. Jason. Alien Vs. Predator. Combining the franchises is fun. And putting all of these characters into one movie together — Downey as Iron Man AND Norton as the Hulk, and hopefully some great actors as Cap, Thor, Ant-Man and (I’m hoping) the Wasp… this would have the potential to be one of the greatest comic book geek experiences of all time.
If it’s done right.
Yeah, I know only guys who are already invested in the characters will really care about this, but I’m one of them. So I’m excited to see Downey in this movie. And I’ve got my fingers crossed that new rumors of a Captain America cameo are true as well. In the meantime, just watch the trailer. Looks pretty good, doesn’t it?
