The Greatest Green Lantern — in Plastic!

Some toys, a geek fears he shall never possess. I love the Green Lantern Corps, and I’ve got figures of a great number of the members immortalized in plastic: Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kilowog, Kyle Rayner, Salaak, Tomar-Re, and even the disgraced member of the Corps, Sinestro. All awesome characters, all characters I am extremely happy to own. But there was one member I always wanted… and one I thought would never be made as a toy.

Until today.

G’nort Esplanade G’Neesmacher was a member of the Green Lantern Corps introduced during Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire‘s magnificently silly run on Justice League International. This dog-like alien later discovered he was not a member of the true Green Lantern Corps, but an organization that was attempting to discredit them throughout the universe. His heart proved himself worthy of membership in the true Corps, however. He hasn’t been seen in some time. I, for one, hope he comes back soon. At least we got him in a recent episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold — and he even got to be a hero in that one.

Unfortunately, like a lot of DC Direct’s action figures, G’Nort was designed more for display than playability. There’s very little articulation here — the waist, the shoulders, the elbows, and the neck. Below the waist there’s none at all — not at the hips, the ankles, even the knees. The jaw, oddly, looks like it’s articulated, but I couldn’t quite figure out how to move it.

The sculpt, fortunately, is awesome enough to make up for it. G’Nort is based on Maguire‘s designs, from the giant toenails to the oversized ring on his paw. I do rather prefer the more dog-like nose he sported under later artists like Joe Staton, but the Jughead-style needle-nose is more accurate to his first appearances. I can live with it.

Now if only DC will give me the toy I really want: a scale model of Mogo.

That would rule.

EDIT 2/19/09: Some time after I posted last night, I did manage to articulate the mouth. It apparently was stuck, but once it jimmied loose, it opens and closes quite easily. G’Nort has a pink tongue. In case you were wondering.
